Workshop: Cook & Eat with The Peranakan (17 June)
Cook & Eat Workshops classes are an ideal fun, interactive, shared experience for a group to spend time together – not to mention learning a few new skills and recipes, plus delicious treats to taste too!
The Peranakan's bibik chefs are going to break tradition and share their little family secrets with you. Come with your children too as a fun family time.
Tickets come with a lovely Malacca (oops... Melaka) coffee/tea set and a personalised certificate of participation.
The bibiks are open to conducting classes on weekdays too. If you want to book a Group Cooking Class for your friends or company. Please email email@example.com.
Workshops require a minimum number of persons before they will be held. In event of cancellation due to insufficient participants, a full refund will be made.
About the mystical and wonderful dishes:
1) Nasi Ulam
It is a very hard-to-find dish. Nasi Ulam is a delectable rice salad of raw herbs and vegetable, fried fish and salted fish, all of which have to be very finely julienned and hand minced and normally takes hours to prepare, but satiates the taste buds and senses a long long way.
2) Kueh Dada
Kueh Dada is a popular Nonya dessert and can be found in Singapore and Malaysia. It consists of luscious gula melaka grated coconut wrapped in a fragrant pandan pancake.
3) Apom Bok Kwa
Literally means “pancakes with an accompanying sauce”. The cake is yeast leavened rice flour cake while the twirl comes from the Blue Pea Flower.
4) Apom Balik
Truly a Nonya delight, this folded pancake can be filled with a paste with any kinds of fillings like banana, coconut, red bean and even our hot favourite, Durian!! The only challenge is whether you make them faster than you eat.
About the restaurant
The Peranakan opened its doors in June 2016 and it is currently the only Straits Chinese cuisine restaurant along the Orchard Road belt. The restaurant seats 120 and it’s décor reminisces the home of a wealthy Straits-born merchant with Straits style marble tables and wooden chairs, ornate mirrors, chandeliers and tiles that reflect the Peranakan culture and taste in that era. There are different sections in the restaurant from a main dining room, courtyard style seats and even a private dining room area for parties and special events.
Peranakan meals comprise a generous selection of mouth-watering and aromatic gravy-rich and sometimes spicy dishes usually served with rice. The restaurant’s signature items include it’s unique ‘Tok Panjang’ – a long-table 8 to 12 course grand Peranakan feast, once served at the turn of the century, by wealthy Straits families to mark special occasions like weddings, anniversaries and important birthdays. There is also a Chef’s Table Set Menu, and a new all-day High Tea.
The Peranakan is open daily from 11am to 10pm.
